Planting

A wildlife pond is filled with plant life in spring and summer. Plants float on the surface of the water, spread their leaves in the pond itself, and extend their foliage and blossoms into the air above the pond.

Plants provide a vital habitat for the larger creatures which live in the pond, including amphibians and sticklebacks, as well as acting as a food source, a place to breed, and a hiding place for smaller pond creatures.

Our native pond plants are either of local provenance, or ordered from wildflower nurseries. Clients are free to choose from a range of plants which they would prefer to have in their own pond.

In shallower parts of the pond, planting is carried out using aquatic compost in hessian sacks. In deeper areas, water plants are set in seed trays or planting baskets containing aquatic compost with a surface layer of horticultural gravel. This allows easy removal of plants for pond maintenance.
